Founded in 1820, Indiana University is the state's flagship university and Bloomington is its flagship campus. Located on a beautiful residential campus in a delightful small Midwestern city, IU offers the quintessential college experience.

Preparation for whatever comes next

Our students’ success is our No. 1 priority. To better prepare them for the careers of tomorrow, we’ve launched or reconfigured seven schools since 2012. And we’re constantly adding new academic programs, like intelligent systems engineering.

To help our students succeed now and after graduation, we’ve kept our tuition and fees as low as possible and increased scholarships. Over five years, our nationally recognized MoneySmarts financial literacy program has helped IU students reduce their borrowing by 17 percent, or $112.8 million.

Faculty who inspire

Our faculty members catalyze discoveries and ignite students’ potential. Throughout their careers, we help our faculty share their knowledge, innovate in their research and creative activity, and prepare for leadership positions—all within an environment of intellectual freedom that values diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

A culture of perpetual discovery

Discovery is what we do. Our expansive, interdisciplinary explorations and artistic endeavors have yielded many innovations, from the detection of a new particle to digital technology that restored a man’s face.

No challenge is too big for us. That’s why we’re investing $300 million over five years in our most ambitious research program ever: Grand Challenges, which will develop transformative solutions for some of the planet’s most pressing problems.

Helping Indiana thrive

IU is an engine for Indiana’s economy. Our expertise helps Indiana communities and organizations succeed. And we translate the discoveries and innovations of our faculty, staff, and students into new products, services, and companies.

During the 2016 fiscal year, 53 U.S. patents—an IU record—were granted to the IU Research and Technology Corporation, which transfers IU discoveries to the commercial marketplace. Since 1997, IU research has generated more than 2,700 inventions, leading to more than $112 million in licensing and royalty income for IU departments, labs, and inventors.

An education that works anywhere

IU is a gateway to the world—and we prepare students to live and work anywhere in it.

We have wide-ranging language and culture programs, more than 350 overseas study options, Global Gateway Network offices in other countries, and partnerships with more than 50 universities worldwide. Nearly 9,000 international students are pursuing their educations here—a testament to the power of an IU degree.

A community where you belong

Our diversity is one of our greatest strengths. The students, faculty, and staff you’ll encounter here are a cross section of our world. Together, they form a culturally rich community of mutual respect, understanding, and support where everyone can fit in and flourish.

A healthier state, nation, and world

Your health is close to our heart. That commitment has led to many achievements over the years, such as the first use of DNA technologies to locate a marker for a human disease gene—the gene responsible for Huntington’s disease.

Led by our eight clinical schools—including the IU School of Medicine—we’re investing in research, training, collaboration, and infrastructure that facilitate better treatments and cures and lead to solutions for today’s biggest public health challenges.
