The University of Missouri-St. Louis is the largest public research university in eastern Missouri, and the third largest in the state, providing an academic home to nearly 17,000 students and conferring more than 3,000 degrees annually. UMSL offers a wide range of baccalaureate and masters degrees, two education specialist degrees, and 17 doctoral degrees including the only professional doctor of optometry program in Missouri.

UMSL was established in 1963 as the fourth campus of the University of Missouri System to better serve the state’s most populous and economically important region. Since its founding, UMSL has worked collaboratively with the region to provide a highly educated and diverse workforce. With more than 98,000 alumni, UMSL graduates can be found in all 50 states and more than 60 countries. But, their greatest impact is felt right here in St. Louis where more than 65,000 UMSL alumni live and work, driving the region’s economy and contributing mightily to its social and cultural well-being.

Academic programs are offered through the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education, Nursing, and Optometry, and through the Schools of Fine and Performing Arts and Social Work, Graduate School, Engineering Program, and Honors College.

Thirteen programs at UMSL have received top 50 national rankings in the high research classification by Academic Analytics, a company that ranks doctoral programs based on faculty scholarly productivity. Ranked programs include: accounting, applied mathematics, clinical psychology, communication, criminology, educational counseling, educational psychology, evolutionary biology, finance, information systems, philosophy, psychology, and social work.

In addition, UMSL has been recognized for community engagement by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching for exceptional collaboration with the larger community for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources and is the only institution in Missouri that received a Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award from INSIGHT into Diversity magazine. UMSL is also recognized for the way it recruits and retains military veterans.

Situated on 470 rolling acres in St. Louis County, UMSL is divided into North Campus and South Campus by Natural Bridge Road. With a mix of modern and historic academic buildings, as well as a variety of student residence halls, a new recreation center and a world-class performing arts center, the campus includes more than 70 structures accounting for nearly 3.5 million square feet of building space. It’s the perfect setting for students to gain unique insights from outstanding faculty and work experience from internships at companies and organizations found only in this world-class metropolitan region.
